Where Is Online Sports Betting Legal In The Usa?
Last year, South Dakota voters approved a legislatively-referred constitutional amendment on Nov. 3 legalizing sports betting within the city limits of Deadwood, South Dakota. Maryland voters also approved a legislatively-referred statute authorizing sports and events wagering at certain licensed facilities. Proponents of a California measure that would legalize sports betting at American Indian gaming casinos and licensed racetracks reported submitting about 1.4 million signatures in December. If enough signatures are deemed valid, voters will decide that measure in November 2022. Virginia is perhaps the most likely to soon see mobile sports betting with the passage of a bill intended to do just that having recently passed the lower chambers in the state legislature.
The first retail sportsbooks opened in September 2019 and the first online sports sites launched the next month. One of the most stringent protocols for any gambling sector is age verification. States have gambling age requirements to prevent minors from gaining access to both brick-and-mortar and online gambling platforms. Most states have a minimum gambling age somewhere between 18 and 21. However, most state-regulated sports betting platforms that we’ve seen launched require participants to be at least 21 years old, but there are a few exceptions.
